What Powerless is
Powerless is the first volume in Lauren Roberts's series, published in 2023, set in the kingdom of Ilya — a place where only the Elites have power and where being born without an ability has become a crime.
At its center is Paedyn Gray, an Ordinary who passes as a Psychic so she won't be banished. When she catches the attention of one of Ilya's princes, the facade begins to crack — and the young woman is thrown into the Purging Trials, a public competition meant to celebrate the power of the Elites.
Rocco describes the book as a romantasy and a New York Times bestseller, as well as a “BookTok favorite”, and gathered the three main volumes into a box set in Brazil in July 2026, with 1,288 pages and a translation by Ivanir Calado.
The reading order
The main series has three volumes. The novellas slot into specific moments and can be skipped without losing anything — they widen the picture, they don't move the central spine.
| Order | Title | Type | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Powerless (2023) | Main novel | Entry point: introduces Paedyn, Kai and the kingdom of Ilya |
| 1.5 | Powerful (2024) | Novella | Optional; set during the same period as the first book |
| 2 | Reckless (2024) | Main novel | Direct continuation of the tension between the two leads |
| 3 | Fearless (2025) | Main novel | Conclusion of the main trilogy |
| 3.5 | Fearful (2025) | Novella | Optional; set during the same period as the final volume |
Dates refer to the original English-language publication. The order above is the recommended reading order.
If you want the leanest version: Powerless, Reckless and Fearless. If you want the complete experience: add Powerful after the first book and Fearful after the third.
What each volume is
Powerless builds the world and the conflict: Paedyn's facade, the kingdom of Ilya and the competition that puts the two leads on opposite sides.
Reckless picks the relationship up exactly where the first volume left it and turns the chemistry into a political problem — which usually makes it the volume readers talk about most once they're already in the series.
Fearless closes the trilogy and forces the leads to choose between duty and desire, the theme that organizes the entire series.
The novellas exist for anyone who wants more time with the side characters and the world without touching the central spine. Skipping the novellas leaves no plot hole.
Main characters
Paedyn Gray is the protagonist: an Ordinary who keeps passing herself off as a Psychic, trained from a young age to observe so she won't be reported. All the ingenuity of the series grows out of that condition — she survives by reading the room, not by power.
Kai Azer is the prince of Ilya who also holds the post of enforcer — in other words, he exists institutionally to find and punish whoever doesn't have power. That contradiction is what holds the romance up: his job is incompatible with what he feels.
The two of them are enemies to lovers in the literal sense: they meet in a context of hunting, and the relationship only exists because neither one obeys their own role.
Tropes and level of fantasy
- Enemies to lovers — the attraction is born from a pursuit that is, at the same time, institutional and personal.
- Impostor — the heroine wears an identity that isn't her own, and the book is sustained by that constant risk.
- Forbidden romance — the bond between the two is incompatible with what the society of Ilya allows.
- Deadly competition — the Purging Trials give the series the clock and the pressure of an arena.
- Power gap — he's a prince, she's walking crime: the asymmetry is structural.
On the level of fantasy: Powerless is a court romantasy, not a detailed magic system. The Elites' powers exist and organize society, but the book isn't built around magical rules — it's built around politics, competition and hierarchy. Anyone after dense worldbuilding may find the terrain lighter than they expected.
There is arena violence and adult content in the volumes. The age range of the original edition is young adult and up.
Who it works for
It works well for readers who like romance where the attraction is risky, a lead who survives by pretending, and a court full of intrigue. It also works for anyone who wants a trilogy with a clear beginning, middle and end.
It may not be the best choice for anyone looking for an urban dystopia in the style of Shatter Me — the terrain here is palatial, and the atmosphere is one of a game, not of scarcity. If that's your doubt, the piece Powerless and Shatter Me does the head-to-head axis by axis.
And for anyone entering romantasy right now, Romantasy for Beginners explains what to expect from the genre before choosing a first title.
The adaptation in development
Amazon announced a series based on Lauren Roberts's books in June 2025, with Daphne Ferraro as showrunner and the author among the executive producers, alongside the production companies involved in the project.
What's confirmed is the development. There's no premiere date and no announced cast — and until that changes, any list of “who will play Paedyn and Kai” is speculation, not information.
Brazilian editions and where to find them
In Brazil, Rocco gathered the three main volumes — Powerless, Reckless and Fearless — into a box set launched in July 2026, with 1,288 pages and a translation by Ivanir Calado. The publisher reports more than 100,000 copies sold in the country.
The box set is currently the most practical route for anyone who wants the complete trilogy in one go; the volumes also circulate on their own, depending on stock at the moment.
The novellas Powerful and Fearful are not part of the Brazilian box set of the three main books — anyone who wants them will need to follow them through the original catalog.
